Jose Gomes, 55, of Hagerstown, died at Frederick Health Hospital after he was struck by Oxon Hill resident Osman Perez Mollo's Subaru while he was picking up garbage cans on Green Valley Road in Clarksburg early on Wednesday morning.

According to police, shortly after 5:30 a.m., the garbage truck was stopped in the northbound lanes on Green Valley Road when Gomes got out to retrieve garbage cans and was struck by the Subaru, which rammed into the back of the truck.

Gomes was rushed to the hospital and died from his injuries.

Mollo, 53, and Jose Flores Sanchez, 53, of Gaithersburg, who was a passenger in the garbage truck, were uninjured.

It is unclear what caused the crash, which is still under investigation. It led to a road closure for several hours in the area.

Police say that once the investigation into the fatal crash is complete, the information will be passed on to the Frederick County State's Attorney to determine whether charges should be filed.
